Daimler-Benz revealed the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL at the 1955 New York Auto Show. While its 161.6 mph top speed was impressive, its roof-hinged "gullwing" doors made it unforgettable, which allowed the car's doors to open upward. Only 1,400 gullwing Coupés were built from 1955 to 1957 before the model evolved into the 300 SL Roadster.
