About this car
Dubbed by some as "the vacuum cleaner," this car became an American racing icon.
The Chaparral 2J was a highly unconventional race car that competed in the 1970 SCCA Can-Am series. Nicknamed the “vacuum cleaner,” it featured a groundbreaking design with two fans mounted at the rear of the car. Powered by a separate secondary engine, these fans created powerful suction by extracting air from beneath the chassis. In effect, it became the world’s first active ground-effect race car. However, for the 1971 season, a change in SCCA regulations banned the use of auxiliary engines, leading to the retirement of the 2J.
